The Fuyu variety is an excellent choice of Persimmons for the backyard gardener due to its honeyed sweet taste with notes of cinnamon and brown sugar, as well being a non-astringent fruit that lacks a true core and the bitterness associated with other Persimmon cultivars. For these reasons, the entire fruit can be consumed much like you would eat an apple, except you don't have to stop and toss out the core - it is fully edible. Fuyu persimmons are a medium-sized variety averaging 2 – 3 inches in diameter, and typically have a squat, rounded appearance much like an orange heirloom tomato, although sometimes developing four distinct sides. Skin is thin, glossy, and smooth, showcasing light orange to dark orange-red hues. Underneath the surface, pale orange flesh is dense, smooth, succulent, and crisp. Fuyu persimmons have been cultivated all over Asia for thousands of years and are considered the national fruit of Japan. The name Diospyros translates to "divine fruit" in Greek, signifying the great affection cultures have had for this fruit over the centuries. Lives most comfortably in climates that don’t dip below 0° F, and reaches 15 ft. in height and width.
