Description

The River Birch Tree (Betula nigra) is a fast-growing native shade tree prized for its distinctive peeling bark, graceful branching, and excellent tolerance of wet soils. Young trunks display beautiful salmon, cinnamon, and creamy-white bark that curls and exfoliates with age, creating outstanding year-round texture and winter interest. Its attractive green leaves form a light, airy canopy that provides welcome summer shade before turning yellow in fall.

River Birch is especially useful for landscapes with moist or poorly drained soil, making it an excellent choice for rain gardens, stream banks, low areas, pond edges, and larger residential properties. Unlike many birches, it also handles summer heat and humidity remarkably well, giving it a broad range of landscape uses. This adaptable native tree grows quickly and develops an attractive rounded to pyramidal canopy that works beautifully as a specimen tree, shade tree, or naturalized landscape feature.

Hardy in USDA Zones 4–9, River Birch performs best in full sun to partial shade and prefers moist, acidic soil, though established trees can tolerate occasional dry periods. Mature trees typically reach approximately 40–70 feet tall and 40–60 feet wide. With its colorful peeling bark, fast growth, native wildlife value, and ability to thrive in wet conditions, the River Birch is an outstanding choice for adding shade, character, and natural beauty to the landscape.
